It all started in the mind of one man with an idea. Hmm, what would happen if I threw 20 friends
in a dragon boat (none of which even knew what a dragon boat was at the time) and entered them into
a festival? This was the thought of Kevin Hong one day back in the spring of 2000. Kevin soon
found out that he was going to get more than he bargained for. Thus the story of Team Ruckus began
with the team selling subs around the University of Waterloo Campus to fund our entry fee into the Waterloo
festival.

After only four practices Team Ruckus showed up at Laurel Creek Conservation Area in Waterloo with
little expectation and much anxiety of the unknown. It didn't take long before Ruckus turned heads
and became a highlight of the festival. Not only were we the loudest and most enthusiastic team, we
showed our determination and heart for winning as we paddled a 2:18 and 2:17 in two of our first
three races as a team. We were probably the most unconventional dragon boat other teams had ever seen but
we got the job done and thus set the tone for TEAM RUCKUS.

|
Since our inaugural season, Ruckus has built upon our success at the Waterloo festival, as we have become
a more competitive team. We have an affiliation with the University of Waterloo Alumni, as a majority of our
team have always been either Waterloo grads or current students. Last year we entered four festivals and
completed out first full season of dragon boating. Our successes in each of the four festivals have
lead us to making a bigger commitment this year as we have hired Fred Heese (coach of the Men's National
Team) as our coach.

This season has already proven to be a success and we still have half the summer to go.
How do we surpass what we have already accomplished? Well, we take Ruckus international. Lookout Chicago rumor has
it there is a RUCKUS coming your way!
|
|
In a very short period of time Team Ruckus has many accomplishments to be proud of. Each year expectations
are exceeded and the team raises the bar of excellence. As we continue to grow as a team, there are many
more chapters of the Ruckus saga to be written. We have just gotten our feet wet!
